You can purchase a limited mileage plan. Many companies understand that you may only drive your car occasionally. They have developed plans where you pay much less for the policy, but are limited to a certain number of miles per year.

When you visit your insurance company, don't forget to ask for any discounts that apply to you! There are existing discounts for:

1. senior citizens
2. alarm systems
3. driver training courses
4. good driving record 5. students with a higher than "B" average
6. college student away from home without car
7. safety devices
8. nonsmoker or nondrinker
9. participation in car pool
10. car use for pleasure only
11. multiple vehicles covered under the same policy
12. multiple policies (auto, boat, home, life insurance)

For example, Allstate offers a 15% discount if all your policies are with their company, or if you have more than one car on your policy.

Discounts for safety features can be very large with specific companies. For example, USAA offers a 60% discount on medical and personal injury insurance for cars with airbags. Nationwide offers a 50% discount for air bags which protect both the driver and passenger, a 40% discount for driver-side airbag, and 20% discounts for automatic seat belts. Allstate and USAA also offer discounts on collision and liability premiums (10% and 5%, respectively) for vehicles with four wheel anti-lock brakes.
